The Brother HL-L2300D is a mono laser printer in the HL-L2300 series, which shares cartridges across 12 models.
It takes two black cartridges that differ only in capacity: the TN630 at about 1,200 pages and the TN660 at about 2,600. At our prices that is 1.7¢ a page against 0.8¢, so the high-yield cartridge costs less to run unless you print very little.
The drum is a separate part on this printer. The DR630 is rated for about 12,000 pages, so it outlasts several toner cartridges and only needs replacing when the printer reports drum life, not every time you change toner.
Brother has stated publicly that its firmware updates do not block third-party cartridges, and the printer counts pages rather than measuring toner, which is why the Replace Toner message can appear before a cartridge is empty.

Questions about the HL-L2300D
Which toner cartridge does the HL-L2300D take?
Brother lists the TN630 standard-yield and the TN660 high-yield cartridge, and the HL-L2300D appears on Brother's own TN660 compatibility list at an approximate 2,600-page yield. The printer ships with a starter cartridge that yields approximately 700 pages.
Is the drum a separate part on this printer?
Yes. Brother lists the DR630 drum unit, which yields approximately 12,000 pages, as a separate consumable from the toner cartridge. The control panel has its own Drum LED that signals Drum ! and Replace Drum independently of the Toner LED.
Does the HL-L2300D have a screen?
No. Brother's control panel for this model uses LED indicators rather than an LCD, and Brother documents the machine's states as LED indications for Ready, Toner, Drum, Paper and Error. Messages such as Replace Toner and Replace Drum are signalled by which LED is lit or flashing.
