Brother says Replace Toner but the cartridge is new. Here’s what Brother actually publishes

Brother printers count pages rather than measure toner, so the Replace Toner message is a counter reaching a number, not a sensor reading an empty cartridge. Brother publishes no button sequence to reset that counter. What Brother does publish is Continue Mode, a separate drum counter reset, and a checklist for when the message won’t clear.

Why the message appears early

Brother attributes Replace Toner and Toner Life End appearing before the rated yield to page coverage, not to a direct measurement of the toner left in the cartridge. Print a lot of heavy pages and the counter gets there sooner. Brother also notes that with non-genuine supplies the machine “may not be able to detect accurately the amount of toner remaining.”

Continue Mode: what Brother publishes instead of a reset

Brother defines it plainly: “The Continue Mode forces the machine to continue printing after the control panel displays Replace Toner.” It is a setting in the menu, not a key combination, and the steps depend on which panel your machine has.

• Keypad and LCD models (HL-L2464DW, DCP-L2605DW, DCP-L2640DW, MFC-L2800DW and similar): Menu > General Setup > Replace Toner > Continue, then Stop/Exit.
• Touchscreen models (HL-L2480DW, DCP-L2680DW, MFC-L2820DW and similar): Settings > All Settings > General Setup > Replace Toner, then Continue.
• One-line LCD printers (HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW): arrow to General Setup, OK, Replace Toner, OK, then Continue and Go.
• LED models with no display (HL-L2400D): with the front cover closed and only the Ready LED lit, press Go seven times to toggle it.

Source for all four: Brother’s online user guides (MFC and DCP, HL printers). Brother’s own caution is worth repeating: printing past the estimated life can affect print quality, and you’re printing on toner the machine no longer tracks.

When the message won’t clear after a real replacement

Brother publishes this checklist across dozens of HL, DCP and MFC models:

1. Confirm you replaced the toner cartridge and not the drum unit. They are separate parts.
2. Confirm the cartridge is genuinely new. Brother’s wording: “you MUST install a brand new, unused toner cartridge in order to reset the toner status.”
3. Confirm the cartridge is seated correctly and that both a cartridge and a drum are installed.
4. Clean the corona wire.
5. Check for a firmware update.
6. If it still won’t clear, contact Brother.

The drum counter is a different reset, and it is documented

Drum End Soon and Replace Drum are about the drum unit, which lasts through several cartridges. Brother publishes the reset for it, with a warning: do not reset the drum counter unless you are actually replacing the drum.

• Keypad and LCD models: with the machine on and the cover closed, press OK and the up arrow together, press OK to select Drum, then press the up arrow to reset.
• Touchscreen models: close the front cover, press the error-clear button, press the Toner button until the message changes, then Drum, then Yes.

About the reset codes you’ll find elsewhere

Search this question and you’ll get pages of button sequences, most of them published by cartridge sellers. Brother doesn’t publish any of them, which is why they aren’t on this page. Some of them work on some models. None of them is documented by the manufacturer, and a sequence meant for a different model family can put the machine into a service mode you didn’t want. We’d rather point you at Continue Mode, which is Brother’s own answer to the same problem.
