The Brother MFC-L2820DW is a mono laser all-in-one in the MFC-L2800 series, which shares cartridges across 3 models.
It takes two black cartridges that differ only in capacity: the TN830 at about 1,200 pages and the TN830XL at about 3,000. At our prices that is 2.5¢ a page against 1.1¢, so the high-yield cartridge costs less to run unless you print very little.
The drum is a separate part on this printer. The DR830 is rated for about 15,000 pages, so it outlasts several toner cartridges and only needs replacing when the printer reports drum life, not every time you change toner.
Brother has stated publicly that its firmware updates do not block third-party cartridges, and the printer counts pages rather than measuring toner, which is why the Replace Toner message can appear before a cartridge is empty.

Which toner does the MFC-L2820DW use?
Brother lists TN830 standard, TN830XL high-yield, TN830V value high-yield and a TN830XL twin-pack for this model, with the DR830 drum unit as the separate imaging consumable. Fitting a cartridge from a different series triggers the Wrong Toner Cartridge message.
Does it have a touchscreen?
Yes. Brother lists a 2.7-inch colour touchscreen on this model, which is a step up from the one-line LCD on the print-only HL-L2460DW. Copy, scan and fax menus are driven from that screen.
Can it fax and scan without a computer?
Yes. Brother lists a 33.6K bps fax modem with 400 pages of fax memory and a 50-page automatic document feeder, all operated from the machine's own touchscreen. It also lists Ethernet plus dual-band Wi-Fi for network scanning.
