Brother HL-2230 toner and drum
Your HL-2230 takes the TN450 (high yield) and TN2010 (standard yield), plus the DR420 drum. At our price that is about 0.8¢ a page.
The Brother HL-2230 is a mono laser printer in the HL-2200 series, which shares cartridges across 11 models.
It takes two black cartridges that differ only in capacity: the TN2010 at about 1,200 pages and the TN450 at about 2,600. At our prices that is 1.3¢ a page against 0.8¢, so the high-yield cartridge costs less to run unless you print very little.
The drum is a separate part on this printer. The DR420 is rated for about 12,000 pages, so it outlasts several toner cartridges and only needs replacing when the printer reports drum life, not every time you change toner.
Brother has stated publicly that its firmware updates do not block third-party cartridges, and the printer counts pages rather than measuring toner, which is why the Replace Toner message can appear before a cartridge is empty.

Does the HL-2230 have a separate drum?
Yes. The DR420 drum unit is a separate part rated for about 12,000 pages. Replace it when the printer reports drum life, not when you change toner.
Does using a compatible cartridge void the HL-2230 warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer cannot void your warranty because you used a third-party cartridge. If one of ours damages the printer, our printer damage protection covers the repair.
