The HP LaserJet Pro M404dn is a mono laser printer in the LaserJet Pro M404 series, which shares cartridges across 3 models.
It takes two black cartridges that differ only in capacity: the 58A at about 3,000 pages and the 58X at about 10,000. At our prices that is 2.0¢ a page against 0.7¢, so the high-yield cartridge costs less to run unless you print very little.
On this printer the drum is built into the cartridge, so there is no separate drum to buy or reset. Every new cartridge brings a fresh drum with it.

Questions about the LaserJet Pro M404dn
Which toner cartridge does the M404dn use?
In North America HP lists the HP 58A (CF258A) at approximately 3,000 pages and the HP 58X (CF258X) at approximately 10,000 pages. HP lists different numbers by region: 59A/59X for Europe, Middle East and Africa, and 76A/76X for Asia Pacific.
Is there a separate drum to replace?
HP does not list a separate imaging drum consumable for the M404dn; the toner cartridge is the supply HP publishes for this printer. HP's cartridge table for the M404/M405 series lists only the 58A/58X, 59A/59X and 76A/76X toner cartridges.
Will a third-party cartridge work in it?
HP states that when a cartridge that is not a genuine HP cartridge is installed, the control panel displays a message that the cartridge is unauthorized and explains how to proceed. HP does not publish a guarantee that non-HP cartridges will print, so a compatible cartridge may be flagged at the panel.
