How to install it
- Open the cartridge door on the front of the printer.
- Pull the old cartridge straight out.
- Take the new cartridge out of its bag and rock it gently five or six times end to end.
- Pull the sealing tab straight out to remove the tape.
- Line the cartridge up with the guides inside the printer and push it in until it seats.
- Close the door and print a test page.
If something goes wrong
The printer does not recognize the cartridge
Power the printer down, reseat the cartridge, and make sure the contacts and chip are clean. If the message stays, check whether a firmware update changed how the printer reads third-party chips.

Nine times out of ten the sealing tape is still in place or the cartridge needs rocking to spread the toner. Pull the cartridge, check the tape, rock it gently, and reinstall.

Streaks usually come from the drum, not the toner. Clean the corona wire if your printer has one, and check the drum count before replacing the cartridge again.

How many pages does a 05A print?
About 2,300 pages. The rating follows ISO/IEC 19752 (HP user guide: 'HP print cartridge, rated for up to 2,300 pages'). That is a rated average, so heavy graphics use toner faster than plain text.
05A or 05X: which one fits my printer?
Both fit the same printers. The 05A is the standard-yield cartridge and the 05X is the high-yield one, so the difference is how often you swap it, not whether it works.
Does a compatible cartridge void my printer warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because you used a third-party cartridge. If a cartridge of ours damages your printer, our printer damage protection covers the repair.
What if it does not work in my printer?
Send it back. Returns are open for 90 days and that includes opened cartridges that are defective. Shipping is free both ways.
